Brief Academic Achievements :
Genetic diversity, origin and evolution of several crop species have been elucidated using classical cytogenetic and molecular techniques. For the first time it has been established conclusively that: finger millet/ ragi Eleusine coracana has been domesticated from wild taxon Eleusine africana in East Africa, Guizotia abyssinica or niger originated from Guizotia scabra ssp. schimperi in Ethiopia, sesame Sesamum indicum evolved from Sesamum mulayanum in India. It has been shown that during domestication of above crop species from their wild progenitor species both evolutionary increase and decrease in nuclear DNA amount has occurred. This variation in DNA content is due to evolutionary gain or loss of repetitive DNA sequences in the genome.
Fellow of Society of Cytologists and Geneticists and was a Vice-President of this society. Established Applied Genetics and Biotechnology departments at Karnataka University, Dharwad. After retirement, organized the Biotechnology department in S.J.College of Engineering, Mysore. Worked in various committees of Universities, State Government and Central Government agencies.
